Hey everybody!
having an issue with my top speed on my 1999 R6. i know the bike is rated and capable of achieving around 180mph. unfortunately for some reason i can only bring her up to 130mph before i reach the read line around 12,000rpm in final gear. when i bought the bike the previous owner said he was did about 150 and his friend brought it to around 180mph. I did adjust the idle because it was running around 2200-2500 rpms at idle. could this be why? what are your guys idle and top speed? also when achieving top speed do you have to go through every gear to red line to do so?

If this is for the street (and I am making the assumption), then my answer is probably going to be all your going to get.
I'd also question someone claiming to hit 180 true on a 600 stock. Moto2 bikes which are highly tuned average like 175-185. And in a straight line the rider and wind resistance at the time makes a difference, so I don't understand the point of this.

you don't get the point of this? then maybe you don't belong on a forum? i just checked the specs which state the top speed on my particular year is between 157-160mph so with that being said 130mph is not what i should be getting. the point of this is i want to get the most out of my bike, and i have questions.... thus why im on a forum looking for answers quit being a D!ck. also there are plenty of videos on youtube where riders bring the bike close to that speed. even with wind resistance i should be getting alot closer to at least 150mph. ive taken it out multiple times on roads with freshly paved pavement and little to no wind being a factor. im just trying to figure out if im doing something wrong or if anyone had any tips for me.

do you know what gearing you have..?? that could also be holding your speeds back.
And I think flyers is politely saying don't expect 180 from your R6

lol well i already corrected myself i was mistaken by saying 180. 160 is what the specs said, but still 130 max is an issue. and as far as the gearing goes what exactly do you mean? ive spoken to other riders i ride with who all agree theres an issue with that speed. the bikes quit as shit but tht top speed is killin me lol

What i mean by gearing is if you are running say a 15 tooth front 48 tooth rear sprocket. That will eat up top end

oh well ill find out when i get home tonight. just outta curiosity would tire pressure have any significant effect? if say it were too low? i mean i could see a slower acceleration but would it have a 20-30 mph effect?

um I got news for you Jersey boy. Your 99 R6 aint never going over 130mph even if dropped from 15,000 ft in the air!
Why dont you post a picture of your bike. We would be able to diagnose the problem pretty quick. Hint: its probably the loose nut between the seat & the bars

i found a nail in my tire and found out my tire pressure was extremely low (10psi) and filled it back up but havent tested the speed since then.

hmmm... I wasnt aware vertical drops were measured in MPH?? I thought it was measured in feet per second per second.

well if you can calculate the feet per second you can calculate the miles per hour using the right equation 440fps=330mph since we were using the mph i stayed with that lmao okay this is obnoxious. im fairly certain that my bike is capable of going fast than 130. i just want to know why it wont. its in mint condition so i don't wanna hear the year of the bike being the issue here.

I actually like this thread. We haven't had a quality one like this in a while. Thanks OP. :laugh

but the thing is... youre not using any of the bikes rwhp to get that speed. Just gravity.
As for your issue... I promise you wont see north of 130mph on any stretch of road, even if down hill.
In FL the best way to attain preferred top speeds is helmet, gloves, tshirt, and tight pants. Usually done in the
we hours of the morning at a deserted state highway in the everglades.
still no pics of this magical carpet ride?

Well we have plenty of highways around here and the cops really don't f*** with riders (even for speeding) here in nj chasing motorcyclists is a big no no around here unlike other states.

Well to start with, your redline is at 15.5k. So if you are at 12k, you still have 3000 more Rpm to go. If you are running out of poop at 12k, then something is holding you back....maybe something engine related, or maybe eating too many burgers a 5 Guys. Could be extra resistance from that low tire, but that'd be a stretch (but buddy you are lucky you didn't have a catastrophic failure at that speed. The extra heat build up in a low tire causes bad things to happen.)
If you meant 130mph at 15k rpm, then my guess is the previous owner changed the gearing on the sprockets and installed a SeepoHealer to adjust the speed reading to be accurate.
